PM Modi Inaugurates SEMICON India 2026, Launches Semicon 2.0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi on 17 September 2026. This was the fifth edition of the event. The venue was Yashobhoomi. The show runs from 17 to 19 September 2026. The Prime Minister used the stage to unveil Semicon 2.0, the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission.

Size of the show

More than 600 exhibitors took part. About 300 of them came from outside India. Six country pavilions were set up. Twelve Indian states put up pavilions of their own. A Startup Pavilion and a Workforce Development Zone were also part of the venue. The opening day drew close to 12,000 visitors.

The six pillars of Semicon 2.0

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw set out the plan. Semicon 1.0 laid the base. Semicon 2.0 aims to put the whole ecosystem in place. Its six pillars are design, equipment and materials, fabs, advanced packaging, applied research and talent. Investment pledges of nearly Rs 1 lakh crore have already come in. Close to 1 lakh fresh jobs are expected. The phase targets 200 semiconductor design start-ups and the training of 1 lakh technicians.

Two new production lines

The Prime Minister virtually started commercial lines at two plants. One is CDIL Semiconductor at Mohali, which makes discrete devices. The other is Suchi Semicon at Surat, which does packaging. India now has five working commercial ATMP units. The other three are Micron, Kaynes and CG Semi. Twelve units in all were cleared under Semicon 1.0.

The record of the first phase

About 70,000 design engineers were trained. EDA tools reached more than 500 organisations. Of 105 supported start-ups, 20 have raised venture capital. The first phase was worth roughly 8 billion dollars. The second phase has been set at 13.5 billion dollars. Semicon India began in 2022 and each edition has moved a step ahead, from policy to projects, then to pilot lines, and now to commercial output.
