India at 20th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers Meeting
Power Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik represented India at the 20th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers Meeting held in Manila, the Philippines.

Why in News
On 8 October 2026 Union Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik represented India at the 20th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers' Meeting in Manila, the Philippines.
Union Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik represented India at the 20th East Asia Summit (EAS) Energy Ministers' Meeting held in Manila, the Philippines, on 8 October 2026. He told the meeting that India stands for stronger regional cooperation on energy and for an energy future that is secure, resilient, affordable and sustainable.
Working with ASEAN
Recalling the Act East Policy and India's Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN, the Minister welcomed the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation for 2026 to 2030 and pressed for work under the ASEAN India Plan of Action for the same period, naming the ASEAN Power Grid, regional transmission, multilateral power trade, clean energy and energy security as the areas to push. He recalled the Prime Minister's announcement at the 22nd ASEAN India Summit in 2025 that India would support the ASEAN Power Grid by training 400 professionals in grid connectivity.
India's power numbers
Naik placed India's installed electricity generation capacity at 558.8 GW as on 30 September 2026, of which 308 GW, or 55 per cent, is non-fossil. He said the country crossed the halfway mark for non-fossil capacity in June 2025, five years before the target set in its Nationally Determined Contribution for 2030. Under PM Surya Ghar, about 5.01 million rooftop solar systems had been installed as on 29 September 2026, serving 5.95 million households.
A corridor to Singapore
On regional interconnection, the Minister said India and Singapore are examining a proposed cross-border link of 2,000 MW. One of the options being studied is a land-based transmission corridor of about 3,000 km running from Imphal in India to Singapore through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. Such a link could carry reliable cross-border electricity trade, help absorb clean energy and add to regional energy security. India offered to share what it has learnt in large-scale renewable deployment, grid integration, transmission planning, storage and green hydrogen, and sought closer ties between the ASEAN Centre for Energy and Indian institutions including NTPC, POWERGRID, the Central Electricity Authority, NIWE, NISE and NPTI. Naik also listed strategic petroleum reserves, emergency preparedness, LNG and gas supply security, battery storage, carbon capture and the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme as fields open to cooperation, and backed ASEAN's move to operationalise the enhanced memorandum of understanding on the ASEAN Power Grid.

Exam Point of View
Note the edition (20th), the host city (Manila, the Philippines) and the minister who represented India. The figures to memorise are an installed capacity of 558.8 GW on 30 September 2026 with 308 GW non-fossil at 55 per cent, the non-fossil halfway mark reached in June 2025 against a 2030 target, 5.01 million PM Surya Ghar rooftop systems, the proposed 2,000 MW India-Singapore link and the 3,000 km Imphal to Singapore corridor.
Practice Questions
The 20th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers' Meeting, attended by India, was held in which city?
- A.Jakarta, Indonesia
- B.Manila, the Philippines
- C.Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
- D.Bangkok, Thailand
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Manila, the Philippines, where India was represented by the Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik. Option A, Jakarta, is wrong for this meeting, although it is the seat of the ASEAN Secretariat and therefore a tempting choice in any question about the grouping. Option C, Kuala Lumpur, is wrong here; Malaysia appears in this news for a different reason, as one of the countries a proposed land corridor from Imphal to Singapore would pass through. Option D, Bangkok, is wrong for the same reason, Thailand being another country on that proposed route along with Myanmar. For examinations, link the edition number, twentieth, with the host city and with the two plans the Minister welcomed, the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation and the ASEAN India Plan of Action for the years from 2026 to 2030.
What was India's installed electricity generation capacity as on 30 September 2026, as stated at the meeting?
- A.458.8 GW
- B.508.8 GW
- C.558.8 GW
- D.608.8 GW
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 558.8 GW. Of this total, the Minister said 308 GW comes from non-fossil sources, which works out to fifty-five per cent of installed capacity, a share that matters because it is the headline measure of the energy transition. The other options are wrong because each changes the figure, and they are the sort of near values a candidate may recall from an earlier quarter, since capacity rises every month. Two related facts deserve equal attention. First, India crossed the halfway mark for non-fossil capacity in June 2025, a full five years before the date set in its Nationally Determined Contribution for 2030. Second, under PM Surya Ghar about 5.01 million rooftop solar systems were in place as on 29 September 2026, serving 5.95 million households.
The proposed cross-border power interconnection between India and Singapore discussed at the meeting is of what capacity?
- A.1,000 MW
- B.1,500 MW
- C.2,000 MW
- D.4,000 MW
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 2,000 MW. India and Singapore are exploring options for a link of that capacity, and one option on the table is a land-based transmission corridor of roughly three thousand kilometres from Imphal in India to Singapore, passing through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. The other options are wrong, as each alters the proposed capacity. The distance and the capacity are different numbers and are easy to mix up, so hold them apart: capacity is in megawatts, route length in kilometres. The purpose of the link, as the Minister described it, is to make reliable cross-border electricity trade possible, help integrate clean energy and strengthen energy security across the region, which is also why India backed moves to operationalise the enhanced memorandum of understanding on the ASEAN Power Grid.
At which summit did the Prime Minister announce training of 400 professionals for the ASEAN Power Grid?
- A.The 22nd ASEAN India Summit in 2025
- B.The 18th East Asia Summit in 2023
- C.The G20 Summit in New Delhi
- D.The 21st ASEAN India Summit in 2024
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is the 22nd ASEAN India Summit in 2025, where the Prime Minister announced that India would support the ASEAN Power Grid initiative by training four hundred professionals in grid connectivity. The Minister of State recalled this commitment in Manila while making the case for deeper cooperation under the ASEAN India Plan of Action. Option B is wrong because the announcement belongs to the India-ASEAN track rather than to an East Asia Summit of that year. Option D is wrong since it moves the announcement to the previous edition of the same summit series, a common trap in questions about numbered summits. Option C is wrong; the G20 Summit hosted by India dealt with a far wider agenda and not with this specific training pledge. Remember that the ASEAN Power Grid, regional transmission and multilateral power trade were the areas the Minister highlighted.
