India at G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial Meeting in Houston

Union Minister Manohar Lal led the Indian delegation to the G20 Energy Abundance Ministerial Meeting. The meeting was held in Houston in the United States from 14 to 16 September 2026. It took place under the United States presidency of the G20. The Minister holds the Power portfolio along with Housing and Urban Affairs.

The three pillars

Discussions ran along three themes. The first was energy security and affordable baseload. The second was permitting and regulatory efficiency. The third was critical minerals and resilient supply chains.

What India said

The Minister argued that secure, affordable and reliable energy is the base of development. He said this matters most for developing economies. He described India's energy system as increasingly digital, decentralised and consumer-centric. He reported that India's installed electricity generation capacity has reached 552 GW. More than half of that comes from non-fossil fuel sources. He noted that India met key NDC targets early and is working towards Net Zero by 2070.

Reforms India showcased

The Minister listed steps taken to make regulation efficient and competition wider. He named the National Single Window System. He also named PARIVESH and PM Gati Shakti. These have made approvals for infrastructure more predictable. On minerals, he pressed for diversified supply chains, circularity and downstream value creation in developing countries. He pointed to India's National Critical Mineral Mission, which spans exploration to recycling.

Outcomes of the ministerial

The clean cooking statement backed a technology-neutral and nationally appropriate approach. It accepted that no single solution suits every country. It called for fair access to financing for all clean cooking solutions. The permitting symposium urged voluntary information exchange, capacity building and digital tools. The water reuse framework promotes cost-effective, fit-for-purpose reuse in line with national policy. The minerals communique linked critical minerals to energy security, digital infrastructure and new technologies.
