Why in News

On 8 October 2026 the 20th meeting of the Empowered Task Force on Ganga rejuvenation, chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Paatil, reviewed the Namami Gange Programme in New Delhi.

The 20th meeting of the Empowered Task Force (ETF) on Ganga rejuvenation was held in New Delhi on 8 October 2026 under the chairmanship of Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Paatil. Minister of State Raj Bhushan Chaudhary joined the meeting, along with the Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), Rajeev Kumar Mital, and officials of several ministries and State governments. The agenda covered sewage infrastructure, scientific water management, safe reuse of treated wastewater, aquifer mapping, wetlands and Nature-based Solutions.

Namami Gange: the numbers reviewed

As of August 2026, the programme has sanctioned 527 projects worth 43,266 crore rupees, of which 368 are finished. Sewerage work accounts for 219 sanctioned projects that will add 6,603 MLD of treatment capacity and 5,245 km of sewer network; 147 of these are complete, delivering 4,339 MLD of capacity and 4,615 km of network. The table below sets out the position.

Rivers taken up

A main focus was the Gomti Udgam Sthal in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, whose master plan was cleared at the 68th Executive Committee meeting of NMCG in December 2025. The detailed project report for lake restoration and a 1 MLD Nature-based Solutions sewage plant has been approved, with administrative approval and expenditure sanction issued on 17 September 2026, while the report on restoring turtle habitat and the Panchvatika goes to the 74th Executive Committee. The meeting also took up the Niranjana or Falgu river in Bihar, for which the Secretary of the State Water Resources Department has been named nodal officer, and reviewed Yamuna work at Mathura-Vrindavan, Kosi-Chhata, Agra, Firozabad and Etawah in Uttar Pradesh along with Delhi measures such as the Yamuna Ecological Task Force and drone surveys of drains.

Courses, policies and outreach

The Minister carried forward the call to put water into classrooms, seeking water curricula in schools, water subjects in engineering universities and governance courses in higher education. Under the River Cities Alliance, NMCG and NIUA have built two courses, Principles of Urban River Management and Eco-friendly Waterfront Development, the first taught at Mitraj Sarvajanik, formerly SCET Surat, and OP Jindal Global University, and the second at the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal. Bihar and West Bengal have notified policies on reuse of treated wastewater and Jharkhand is seeking Cabinet approval. Workshops on a framework for small river rejuvenation were held in New Delhi, Pune and Guwahati, and on World River Day the 39th Ganga Task Force of 137 CETF Battalion (TA) ran drives at Prayagraj, Varanasi, Kanpur, Lucknow and Delhi.

Practice Questions

Q1.EnvironmentEasy

Who chaired the 20th meeting of the Empowered Task Force on Ganga rejuvenation?

  1. A.The Union Environment Minister
  2. B.The Union Jal Shakti Minister
  3. C.The Director General of NMCG
  4. D.The Union Urban Affairs Minister
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The Union Jal Shakti Minister

Explanation

The correct answer is the Union Jal Shakti Minister, C. R. Paatil, who presided over the meeting in New Delhi. Option A is wrong because river rejuvenation under the Namami Gange Programme sits with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, not with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, even though the subject is environmental. Option C is wrong; the Director General of the National Mission for Clean Ganga, Rajeev Kumar Mital, attended the meeting and presented the progress of the programme, but the task force is chaired by the Minister. Option D is wrong, although urban local bodies are deeply involved in sewage work and city sanitation action plans. Candidates should also remember that the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, was present, and that the Empowered Task Force is the top review body for the Ganga basin.

Q2.EnvironmentMedium

As reviewed at the meeting, how many projects has the Namami Gange Programme sanctioned, and at what cost?

  1. A.427 projects worth 33,266 crore rupees
  2. B.527 projects worth 43,266 crore rupees
  3. C.627 projects worth 53,266 crore rupees
  4. D.327 projects worth 23,266 crore rupees
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 527 projects worth 43,266 crore rupees

Explanation

The correct answer is 527 projects worth 43,266 crore rupees, the position as of August 2026, with 368 projects already completed. The other options change either the count of projects or the cost and are therefore wrong; they are typical distractors built by shifting the leading digit. For revision it helps to hold the sewerage sub-totals alongside the headline numbers: of 219 sanctioned sewerage projects, 147 are finished, and the sanctioned treatment capacity of 6,603 MLD has so far yielded 4,339 MLD, while the sanctioned sewer network of 5,245 km has produced 4,615 km on the ground. The Minister used this review to press agencies and State governments to clear pending detailed project reports and land issues so that ongoing projects finish on time.

Q3.EnvironmentHard

The rejuvenation of the Gomti Udgam Sthal, a main focus of the meeting, is located in which district?

  1. A.Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh
  2. B.Gaya, Bihar
  3. C.Etawah, Uttar Pradesh
  4. D.Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh

Explanation

The correct answer is Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, the source area of the Gomti whose master plan for rejuvenation and integrated development was approved at the 68th Executive Committee meeting of the National Mission for Clean Ganga held in December 2025. Option B, Gaya in Bihar, is wrong for this question, though Bihar does figure in the meeting through the proposed rejuvenation of the Niranjana, also called the Falgu. Option C, Etawah, is wrong but appears in the review as one of the Uttar Pradesh towns where projects for the Yamuna have been sanctioned, along with Mathura-Vrindavan, Kosi-Chhata, Agra and Firozabad. Option D, Prayagraj, is wrong here; it was among the cities where cleanliness drives were held on World River Day. Remember that a one MLD plant using Nature-based Solutions has been approved for the Gomti site.
