Why in News

On 1 November 2026 Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit assumed charge as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force and announced 'VAYU' as the vision that will guide the service.

Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, PVSM AVSM VM VSM, became the 29th Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force on 1 November 2026. He began the day by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in honour of soldiers who died serving the country, and was then given a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Air Force Station New Delhi.

The officer

The new Chief is an Experimental Test Pilot as well as a Qualified Flying Instructor, and has flown for more than 3,500 hours. Before reaching the top post he had already filled three of the service's senior chairs: Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command, and Vice Chief of the Air Staff.

'VAYU': four pillars

In his first address as Chief he named his plan for the force 'VAYU', built on four pillars:

VVigilance, Victory and Readiness - top operational preparedness in every formation, and combat strength brought back to sanctioned levels
AAatmanirbharta - faster indigenous work on platforms, sensors, weapons and technologies for self-reliance in operations
YYukti - ingenuity and innovation in doctrine, technology and procedure, including AI-enabled command and control and counter-drone capability
UUnity of Effort - closer jointness with the Army, the Navy and national agencies

Linked to JAI

The fourth pillar is tied to the national idea of JAI, which stands for Jointness, Aatmanirbharta and Innovation. Taken together, the Chief said, 'VAYU' points the Air Force towards being operationally ready, advanced in technology, self-reliant and smoothly integrated with the other services, able to guard national interests and to deter a conflict through credible air power.

Why it matters for aspirants

Changes at the head of a service are asked about in almost every competitive examination, usually along with the serial number of the appointment, the date and any new doctrine or vision announced on the day. Here all three are in one release: the 29th Chief, 1 November 2026, and the 'VAYU' framework with its four named pillars.
