Asian Games 2026: Services Athletes Win Record 27 Medals
Defence forces athletes won 27 medals, six of them gold, at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, their best ever showing, and Rajnath Singh felicitated them.

Why in News
On 12 October 2026 Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitated defence forces sportspersons in New Delhi for winning 27 medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, the best return the Services have ever had at the event.
The Indian Armed Forces marked their strongest ever outing at a continental multi-sport meet on 12 October 2026, when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh honoured the Services sportspersons who brought home 27 medals from the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi joined the ceremony in New Delhi, where Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth was also present.
The medal count
The 27 medals won by soldiers, sailors and air warriors break up into 6 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze. India as a whole returned with 85 medals, made up of 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, and finished fourth on the medal table. The Services therefore supplied 32 per cent of the country's medals and 28.57 per cent of its gold. In all, 92 athletes drawn from the three Services took the field in 19 disciplines.
The firsts behind the tally
- Naib Subedar Neeru Dhanda took two gold and one silver, and became the first Indian woman to win gold in the individual women's trap event at the Games.
- Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh won two silver and one bronze, the first Indian man in track and field to collect three individual medals at a single edition.
- Havildar Sawan Barwal took silver in the men's marathon in a national record time of 2:11:37, closing a 44-year gap since India last won a marathon medal at the Games.
- Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare won a medal in the men's high jump, an event in which India had not reached the podium for 56 years.
What the minister said
Rajnath Singh put the showing down to discipline, hard work and team spirit, and spoke of the unseen part of an athlete's life: training before dawn, gym work, injury and recovery, and juggling unit duties with preparation while living away from family. To those who competed without reaching the podium he said that giving up, not losing, is real defeat. He credited the Mission Olympic Wing with spotting talent, giving it scientific training and world-class facilities and readying it for international competition, and thanked coaches, support staff, physiotherapists, nutritionists and the families of the athletes.
Looking to 2028
The minister asked trainers and support staff to work to a systematic plan for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 and to aim higher than this year's return. He said the aim is not simply wider participation but a place for India among the leading powers of world sport, backed by sporting infrastructure and modern training facilities.

Practice Questions
How many medals did sportspersons of the Indian defence forces win at the 2026 Asian Games?
- A.21
- B.27
- C.37
- D.85
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 27. Athletes of the three Services returned from the Asian Games in Japan with 27 medals, broken up as 6 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze, which is the best the defence forces have ever managed at the event. Option A, 21, is the number of gold medals won by the whole Indian contingent, not the Services total. Option C, 37, is the number of bronze medals in India's overall tally, so it too belongs to the national figure and not to the Services. Option D, 85, is India's complete medal haul at these Games, of which the Services share worked out to 32 per cent. A candidate who keeps the two layers apart, the national count and the Services count, will not confuse these numbers. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitated the medal winners in New Delhi on 12 October 2026.
Who became the first Indian woman to win gold in the individual women's trap event at the Asian Games?
- A.Naib Subedar Neeru Dhanda
- B.Havildar Sawan Barwal
- C.Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh
- D.Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Naib Subedar Neeru Dhanda. She finished the Games with two gold and one silver, and her win in the individual women's trap event made her the first Indian woman to take gold in that shooting event at the Asian Games. Option B, Havildar Sawan Barwal, is a male marathon runner whose silver came in a national record time and ended a long gap in that event, so he could not have competed in a women's event. Option C, Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh, won two silver and one bronze and is the first Indian man in track and field to take three individual medals at one edition of the Games. Option D, Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare, won his medal in the men's high jump. Only option A matches both the event and the first.
Which athlete's silver medal ended India's 44-year wait for a marathon medal at the Asian Games?
- A.Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh
- B.Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare
- C.Havildar Sawan Barwal
- D.Naib Subedar Neeru Dhanda
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Havildar Sawan Barwal. He took silver in the men's marathon in a national record time of 2:11:37, and that medal closed the long gap of 44 years since India had last stood on an Asian Games marathon podium. Option A, Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh, is also a track and field athlete, but his medals were two silver and one bronze, and his distinction is being the first Indian man in athletics with three individual medals at a single edition. Option B, Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare, won his medal in the men's high jump, an event where India had waited 56 years for a podium finish, so the gap is a different one. Option D, Naib Subedar Neeru Dhanda, is a shooter who won gold in the women's trap event.
