DRI Seizes 15.59 kg Drugs in Three Operations, 5 Arrested

Why in News

On 4 October 2026 the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence announced the seizure of 15.59 kg of amphetamine, cocaine and heroin in three operations and the arrest of five persons under the NDPS Act, 1985.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which works under the Ministry of Finance, has taken 15.59 kg of narcotics out of circulation in three separate actions built on advance intelligence. The drugs are amphetamine, cocaine and heroin, and the operations were carried out on 29 and 30 September 2026. Five people have been held under the NDPS Act, 1985. The agency gave the details on 4 October 2026.

Chase on the Ujjain-Dewas highway

On 30 September the DRI and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) stopped a Mahindra Thar at the Ujjain-Dewas Toll Plaza in Madhya Pradesh. The driver crashed through the barricade and fled. Officers followed for roughly an hour and a half and caught the vehicle near Bicholi Mardana in Indore. The spare tyre fixed to the rear door had been hollowed out: inside were 21 packets holding 7.116 kg of a whitish-yellow crystalline substance. A field test kit confirmed it as amphetamine. The drug and the car were seized and all three occupants arrested.

Cocaine inside chocolate tubes at Hyderabad

On 29 September officers at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad stopped an Indian passenger who had flown in from Doha. His cabin bag held seven chocolate tubes that weighed far more than the label claimed. Hidden among the chocolates were 207 pale-yellow oval capsules filled with a white powder. A detection kit identified it as cocaine, weighing 4.9 kg in all. The traveller was arrested.

Heroin in a car-pooling taxi in Punjab

The third action, also on 29 September, took place near Phillaur on the edge of Jalandhar in Punjab. Officers watched traffic near the bridge over the Sutlej and picked out a man riding as a passenger in a rented car-pooling taxi. A blue backpack on his lap held three packets, each containing two smaller ones. The contents tested positive for heroin and came to 3.574 kg. He too was arrested under the same law. The DRI said the three cases show how trafficking routes and concealment tricks keep changing.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalEasy

What was the total quantity of contraband drugs seized by the DRI in its three recent operations?

  1. A.7.116 kg
  2. B.15.59 kg
  3. C.21.5 kg
  4. D.4.9 kg
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 15.59 kg

Explanation

The correct answer is 15.59 kg. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized this cumulative quantity of amphetamine, cocaine and heroin in three separate intelligence-led operations carried out on 29 and 30 September 2026, and five persons were arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985. The total is made up of the amphetamine recovered near Indore, the cocaine found at Hyderabad airport and the heroin taken near Phillaur in Punjab.

Option A gives only the weight of the amphetamine pulled out of the spare tyre of the vehicle intercepted in Madhya Pradesh, so it is a part and not the whole. Option D gives only the cocaine recovered from the chocolate tubes at Hyderabad, which is again one share of the total. Option C is not a figure reported in any of the three cases. Adding the three recoveries together gives the cumulative seizure of 15.59 kg.

Q2.NationalMedium

At which airport did the DRI recover cocaine concealed inside chocolate tubes?

  1. A.Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi
  2. B.Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai
  3. C.Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad
  4. D.Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad

Explanation

The correct answer is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad. Acting on precise intelligence, officers there stopped an Indian passenger who had arrived from Doha. Seven chocolate tubes in his cabin baggage were heavier than their marked weight, and on being opened they were found to hold 207 pale-yellow oval capsules packed with a white powder. A narcotic drug detection kit confirmed the powder as cocaine, and the recovery came to 4.9 kg. The passenger was arrested under the NDPS Act, 1985.

The airports named in options A, B and D are among the busiest in the country, which makes them plausible choices, but none of them figures in this case. The other two operations of the same round took place on roads, one at the Ujjain-Dewas Toll Plaza in Madhya Pradesh and the other near Phillaur in Punjab, not at any airport.

Q3.NationalMedium

Which agency worked with the DRI to intercept the vehicle carrying amphetamine in Madhya Pradesh?

  1. A.Narcotics Control Bureau
  2. B.Central Bureau of Narcotics
  3. C.National Investigation Agency
  4. D.Central Bureau of Investigation
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Central Bureau of Narcotics

Explanation

The correct answer is the Central Bureau of Narcotics, abbreviated CBN. It joined the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence in stopping a Mahindra Thar at the Ujjain-Dewas Toll Plaza in Madhya Pradesh. The driver broke the barricade and drove off, and the officers chased the vehicle for about an hour and a half before cornering it near Bicholi Mardana in Indore. A search showed a hollow in the spare tyre on the rear door, where 21 packets holding 7.116 kg of a whitish-yellow crystalline substance were hidden. A field test kit confirmed amphetamine, and the three occupants were arrested.

The Narcotics Control Bureau, the National Investigation Agency and the Central Bureau of Investigation are all central agencies, which makes options A, C and D look plausible, but none of them is named as the partner in this interception.
