DRI Seizes 50 kg Methamphetamine in Mizoram and Assam

Why in News

On 30 October 2026 the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence reported the seizure of 50 kg of methamphetamine in Mizoram and Assam, with four arrests under the NDPS Act, 1985 and three vehicles seized.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which works under the Ministry of Finance, has taken 50 kg of methamphetamine out of circulation in the North East through two intelligence-led operations run one after the other in Mizoram and Assam. Four people are in custody and three vehicles used to carry the contraband have been taken over by the agency.

The interception in Mizoram

On 29 October 2026 officers of the agency, helped on the ground by the Assam Rifles, stopped a Mahindra Bolero Camper on the Aizawl-Champhai road just outside Aizawl. The team had been told that consignments of drugs were being moved from Zokhawthar towards Aizawl and Silchar. Inside an office table fitted with a storage cabinet a cavity had been built on purpose, and it held 30 brick-shaped packets of pinkish-orange tablets weighing 30 kg in all. Using furniture as cover cargo was a new trick for the region, meant to make the load look like ordinary household or office goods in transit.

The interception in Assam

A day later, on 30 October 2026, the same agency, again assisted by the Assam Rifles, stopped an Ashok Leyland truck and a second Bolero Camper at Dholai, about 40 km short of Silchar. Twenty packets of crystal methamphetamine weighing 20 kg were pulled out from above the driver's cabin, wrapped in tea packets that carried foreign markings so that a casual check would pass over them. A test in the field pointed to the presence of amphetamine in the recovered material.

Why the haul matters

Tablets of this type are sold across the region under the street name Yaba. All four arrests were made under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985. An early reading of the case points to Myanmar as the origin of both consignments. The recovery follows two earlier hauls of 232 kg and 56 kg of the same drug in the North Eastern states, and the three together show how steadily synthetic drugs are being pushed across the international border into India.
