Why in News

The BRICS Traditional and Indigenous Demonstration Games 2026 were held in Ahmedabad on 12 October 2026, where Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya opened the event and proposed three areas of cooperation on traditional sports among BRICS nations.

The BRICS Traditional and Indigenous Demonstration Games 2026 were held on Monday, 12 October 2026, at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Naranpura, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The day-long event drew country delegations, athletes, practitioners, technical officials and partner institutions, and was meant to put the sporting heritage and cultural diversity of the BRICS grouping on display. Representatives of 10 BRICS nations attended.

Who opened it

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya declared the games open, with Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi present. The minister said India is putting sport at the centre of nation-building and is reshaping its sporting system through a 360-degree approach that takes in grassroots participation, talent identification, coaching, sports science, infrastructure, athlete welfare and international exposure. He said nearly 3.76 billion US dollars has been committed under the Khelo India initiative.

Three proposals for BRICS

Dr Mandaviya placed three ideas before the member countries. The first is a voluntary BRICS Repository of Traditional and Indigenous Sports that would document each sport's history, cultural meaning, rules, equipment and field-of-play requirements. The second is exchanges among practitioners, coaches, researchers, educational institutions and cultural experts across the grouping. The third is holding periodic demonstrations of traditional and indigenous sports at future BRICS sporting events.

Fit India figures

Speaking of the Fit India Movement, the minister said the 'Sundays on Cycle' campaign now draws more than 5 million people to cycle at more than 3 lakh locations every Sunday, and that 94 editions of the campaign have been held so far across the country.

Sports on show

Each of the ten delegations demonstrated its own traditions. India presented Mallakhamb, Yogasana and Kalaripayattu. Russia showed Gorodki and Sambo, while Belarus also brought Gorodki. China's team performed Wushu, the Lion Dance and Health Qigong. Kazakhstan demonstrated Asyk Atu, Togyzkumalak and Qazaq Kuresi, and Iran brought Zoorkhaneh, Haft Sang and Ghanieh. Bolivia showed the largest spread, including Lucha de Cholitas, Tinku, Rayuela, Trompo, Cachinas and Carrera de Sacos. Brazil's set covered Zarabatana, the indigenous blowpipe, Corrida de Toras or log race, Brazilian para-jiu-jitsu and Capoeira. South Africa demonstrated Kgati and Iintonga, and the United Arab Emirates presented Al Tabbah. Cultural presentations and audience activities ran alongside, and the participating teams were felicitated at the close.

Practice Questions

Q1.SportsEasy

Where were the BRICS Traditional and Indigenous Demonstration Games 2026 held?

  1. A.New Delhi
  2. B.Ahmedabad, Gujarat
  3. C.Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
  4. D.Pune, Maharashtra
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Explanation

The correct answer is Ahmedabad in Gujarat, where the games were staged at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in the Naranpura area on 12 October 2026. Option A is the strongest distractor because New Delhi hosted the BRICS Summit and several other events of India's presidency year, so candidates assume every BRICS engagement took place there. Options C and D name cities with well-known sporting facilities, but neither hosted this event. The day-long programme brought together country delegations, athletes, practitioners, technical officials and partner institutions from 10 BRICS nations, and Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya declared the games open in the presence of Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. Cultural presentations ran alongside the sport, and the participating teams were felicitated when the programme closed.

Q2.SportsMedium

Which of these traditional sports was demonstrated by India at the BRICS games in Ahmedabad?

  1. A.Sambo
  2. B.Gorodki
  3. C.Mallakhamb
  4. D.Al Tabbah
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Mallakhamb

Explanation

The correct answer is Mallakhamb, which India demonstrated along with Yogasana and Kalaripayattu. Option A, Sambo, is a Russian combat sport, and Russia showed it alongside Gorodki. Option B, Gorodki, is the one sport demonstrated by two delegations at the event, Russia and Belarus, which makes it a tempting answer for anyone who remembers seeing it twice in the list. Option D, Al Tabbah, was presented by the United Arab Emirates. Other demonstrations included Wushu, the Lion Dance and Health Qigong from China, Asyk Atu, Togyzkumalak and Qazaq Kuresi from Kazakhstan, Zoorkhaneh, Haft Sang and Ghanieh from Iran, Kgati and Iintonga from South Africa, Capoeira and the log race from Brazil, and a long set from Bolivia that included Lucha de Cholitas and Tinku.

Q3.SportsMedium

Which of the following did the Union Sports Minister propose for cooperation among BRICS nations on traditional sports?

  1. A.A voluntary BRICS Repository of Traditional and Indigenous Sports
  2. B.A BRICS Olympic qualifying tournament
  3. C.A common BRICS anti-doping agency
  4. D.A single BRICS sports university in Ahmedabad
Show answer
Correct answer: A. A voluntary BRICS Repository of Traditional and Indigenous Sports

Explanation

The correct answer is a voluntary BRICS Repository of Traditional and Indigenous Sports, the first of three practical areas of cooperation the minister placed before the member countries. The repository would record each sport's history, cultural significance, rules, equipment and field-of-play requirements, so that the knowledge survives even as sport modernises. The second proposal was for exchanges among practitioners, coaches, researchers, educational institutions and cultural experts across the grouping, and the third was for periodic demonstrations of traditional and indigenous sports at future BRICS sporting events. Options B, C and D describe the kinds of institutions sporting blocs sometimes build, but none of them was proposed at this event. The minister framed traditional sport as a vehicle for youth development, inclusion, cultural understanding and international cooperation.
