Why in News

On 22 October 2026 the Prime Minister's Office issued the India-Poland joint statement and the list of outcomes of Prime Minister Donald Tusk's official visit, which fixed a 2030 trade target and brought Poland into the CDRI.

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk was in India from 21 to 23 October 2026 on an official visit made at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Around 100 chief executives and industry representatives travelled with him. The two leaders held talks on bilateral, regional and global questions, and a joint statement was issued in New Delhi.

The four announcements

The visit produced four headline outcomes, listed by the Prime Minister's Office under the areas of trade, disaster management, defence and counter-terrorism:

  • A target of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
  • Poland joining the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), the platform India helped found.
  • Setting up a Defence Industry Dialogue.
  • Agreement to hold a dialogue on counter-terrorism.

Where the partnership stands

Relations were raised to a Strategic Partnership during Mr Modi's visit to Poland in August 2024, when the India-Poland Action Plan for 2024-2028 was adopted. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski finished the plan's mid-term review in Warsaw in September 2026, and both Prime Ministers endorsed it. An India-Poland Business Forum met during the visit, the bilateral working group on agriculture is to resume work, and the two sides agreed to research artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum technologies together. Mr Modi congratulated Poland on passing a GDP of one trillion US dollars; Poland noted India's course towards a ten trillion dollar economy.

Defence, space and connectivity

The leaders welcomed the eighth meeting of the Joint Working Group on Defence, held in Warsaw in September 2026, and said an agreement on mutual protection and exchange of classified information should be signed soon. They pressed for early signing of the EU-India Free Trade Agreement and recalled the India-EU Summit of 27 January 2026 in New Delhi. Direct flights between the two countries, shipping, maritime security, port cooperation and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) were all taken up, along with scientific work in polar affairs.

On the world stage

Poland backed India's membership of an expanded UN Security Council and its candidature for a non-permanent seat for 2028-29. Both sides condemned the terrorist attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025 and called for early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism. India invited Poland to join the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuels Alliance and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. The leaders also welcomed the first foreign ministers' meeting between India and the Visegrad Group of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, and recalled Polish help to more than 2,000 Indian students leaving Ukraine under Operation Ganga.
