With reference to the Indus river system, of the following four rivers, three of them pour into one of them which joins the Indus direct. Among the following, which one is such river that joins the Indus direct?

  1. A.Chenab
  2. B.Jhelum
  3. C.Ravi
  4. D.Sutlej

Correct answer

A. Chenab

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Chenab. The Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej all end up in the Chenab, and the Chenab carries their combined water to the Indus.

The Chenab is formed by the Chandra and Bhaga rivers, which meet at Tandi in Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh. It flows through Jammu and Kashmir into Pakistan. The Jhelum joins it near Jhang and the Ravi joins it further downstream. The Sutlej, after receiving the Beas, meets the Chenab to form the Panjnad, which flows into the Indus near Mithankot. In this way the five rivers of Punjab reach the Indus through a single channel.

B is wrong because the Jhelum, which rises at Verinag and passes through Wular Lake, joins the Chenab, not the Indus. C is wrong because the Ravi also flows into the Chenab. D is wrong because the Sutlej meets the Chenab first, and only their joint stream, the Panjnad, reaches the Indus.

Exam tip: Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej to Chenab; Chenab (as Panjnad) to Indus at Mithankot.
