With reference to 'Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)', consider the following statements : 1. It is an organization of European Union in working relation with NATO and WHO. 2. It monitors chemical industry to prevent new weapons from emerging. 3. It provides assistance and protection to States (Parties) against chemical weapons threats. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 and 3 only
  3. C.1 and 3 only
  4. D.1, 2 and 3

Correct answer

B. 2 and 3 only

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 2 and 3 only. The OPCW is the independent global body that implements the Chemical Weapons Convention; it is not an organ of the European Union.

The OPCW was set up in 1997, when the Chemical Weapons Convention came into force, and has its headquarters at The Hague in the Netherlands. Almost every country is a State Party, India among them. It verifies the destruction of declared chemical weapons stockpiles, inspects chemical industry so that dual-use chemicals are not turned into new weapons, and gives member states assistance and protection against the threat or use of chemical weapons. It works with the United Nations under a relationship agreement and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013.

A is wrong: statement 1 is false; the OPCW is an independent intergovernmental body, not an EU organisation tied to NATO and WHO.

C is wrong: it includes the false statement 1 and leaves out statement 2.

D is wrong: statement 1 is incorrect, so all three cannot be right.

Exam tip: OPCW = The Hague, 1997, Chemical Weapons Convention, Nobel Peace Prize 2013.
