Who among the following is the author of the Kiratarjuniya?

  1. A.Magha
  2. B.Bharavi
  3. C.Bhasa
  4. D.Bhavabhuti

Correct answer

B. Bharavi

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Bharavi. The Kiratarjuniya, a Sanskrit epic poem of the sixth century, was written by Bharavi.

The Kiratarjuniya tells, in 18 cantos, a story from the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata: Arjuna performs penance to win divine weapons, and Shiva tests him by appearing as a Kirata, a mountain hunter. After a fierce fight Shiva reveals himself and gives Arjuna the Pashupata weapon. The poem is one of the five Mahakavyas of classical Sanskrit, and Bharavi was praised for the depth of meaning packed into his verses, summed up in the saying "Bharaver arthagauravam". Bharavi is believed to have been linked with the Pallava court of Kanchi.

Option A is wrong because Magha wrote the Shishupalavadha, another Mahakavya, on Krishna's slaying of Shishupala. Option C is wrong because Bhasa was an early dramatist known for the Svapnavasavadattam. Option D is wrong because Bhavabhuti wrote the plays Uttararamacharita and Malatimadhava.

Exam tip: Kiratarjuniya by Bharavi, Shishupalavadha by Magha, Naishadhiyacharita by Sriharsha; Raghuvamsha and Kumarasambhava by Kalidasa.
