Two wires are made having same length l and area of cross-section A. Wire 1 is made of copper and wire 2 is made of aluminium. It is given that the electrical conductivity of copper is more than that of aluminium. In this context, which one of the following statements is correct?

  1. A.The resistance of wire 1 will be higher than that of wire 2.
  2. B.The resistance of wire 2 will be higher than that of wire 1.
  3. C.The resistance of both the wires will be the same.
  4. D.If same current is flown through both the wires, the power dissipated in both the wires will be the same.

Correct answer

B. The resistance of wire 2 will be higher than that of wire 1.

Explanation

The correct answer is B, The resistance of wire 2 will be higher than that of wire 1. With equal length and area, the wire of lower conductivity, aluminium, has the higher resistance.

Resistance is R = ρl/A, where ρ is resistivity, and resistivity is the reciprocal of conductivity (ρ = 1/σ). Since l and A are the same for both wires, resistance depends only on the material. Copper conducts better, so its resistivity is lower (about 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ Ω m against about 2.8 × 10⁻⁸ Ω m for aluminium), and the copper wire has less resistance. Aluminium is still used in overhead power lines because it is much lighter and cheaper.

A is wrong: copper has the lower resistivity, so wire 1 has the lower resistance, not the higher.

C is wrong: different materials have different resistivities, so the resistances cannot be equal.

D is wrong: power dissipated is P = I²R; with equal current and unequal resistance the power differs, and is greater in the aluminium wire.

Exam tip: R = ρl/A and ρ = 1/σ; silver is the best conductor, then copper, gold and aluminium.

Bronze is an alloy of copper and

  1. A.nickel
  2. B.iron
  3. C.tin
  4. D.aluminium
Show answer
Correct answer: C. tin

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, usually about 88 parts copper to 12 parts tin. Adding tin makes copper harder, stronger and easier to cast, and bronze also resists corrosion well.

Consider the following actions :

1. Detection of car crash/collision which results in the deployment of airbags almost instantaneously

2. Detection of accidental free fall of a laptop towards the ground which results in the immediate turning off of the hard drive

3. Detection of the tilt of the smartphone which results in the rotation of display between portrait and landscape mode

In how many of the above actions is the function of accelerometer required?

  1. A.Only one
  2. B.Only two
  3. C.All three
  4. D.None
Show answer
Correct answer: C. All three

An accelerometer measures acceleration, including the pull of gravity, and each of the three actions depends on reading it. An accelerometer is a small sensor, today usually a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) chip, that senses changes in speed and the direction of gravity.

Consider the following statements :

1. Carbon fibres are used in the manufacture of components used in automobiles and aircrafts.

2. Carbon fibres once used cannot be recycled.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.Both 1 and 2
  4. D.Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Correct answer: A. 1 only

Carbon fibre is widely used in cars and aircraft for its strength and low weight, and it can be recovered and recycled.
