River Danube does not flow through which one of the following capital cities in Europe?

  1. A.Belgrade
  2. B.Budapest
  3. C.Prague
  4. D.Vienna

Correct answer

C. Prague

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Prague. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, stands on the Vltava river, not on the Danube.

The Danube is Europe's second-longest river after the Volga. It rises in the Black Forest of Germany and flows east for about 2,850 km to the Black Sea, passing through or along ten countries, more than any other river in the world. Four national capitals lie on its banks: Vienna (Austria), Bratislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary) and Belgrade (Serbia). The Vltava, which flows through Prague, is a tributary of the Elbe, which drains to the North Sea, so Prague is not even in the Danube basin.

A is wrong: Belgrade lies where the Sava joins the Danube.

B is wrong: the Danube divides Budapest into Buda and Pest.

D is wrong: Vienna stands on the Danube.

Exam tip: Danube capitals in order downstream are Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade; Prague is on the Vltava.
