Consider the following statements about river bridges connecting India with neighbouring countries : 1. 'Maitri Setu', built over Feni river, connects Ramgarh in India with Sabroom in Bangladesh. 2. Jhulaghat suspension bridge connects India with Myanmar. 3. Mechi bridge and its approaches connect Panitanki Bypass in India with Kakarvitta in Nepal. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1 and 2
  2. B.2 and 3
  3. C.1 only
  4. D.3 only

Correct answer

D. 3 only

Explanation

The correct answer is D, 3 only. The Mechi bridge links Panitanki in India with Kakarvitta in Nepal; the other two statements get the places or the country wrong.

Maitri Setu over the Feni river was inaugurated in March 2021. It joins Sabroom in South Tripura, India, with Ramgarh in Bangladesh, giving Tripura a short road link to Chittagong port. The Jhulaghat suspension bridge spans the Kali (Mahakali) river at Jhulaghat in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand and links India with Nepal. The new Mechi bridge over the Mechi river, on the border of West Bengal's Darjeeling district, connects the Panitanki bypass with Kakarvitta in eastern Nepal on the Asian Highway route.

A and C are wrong because statement 1 reverses the towns: Sabroom is in India and Ramgarh in Bangladesh. A and B are wrong because statement 2 is false: Jhulaghat is on the India-Nepal border, not the India-Myanmar border.

Exam tip: Maitri Setu = Feni river, Sabroom (India) to Ramgarh (Bangladesh).
