Consider the following statements : 1. In India, State Governments do not have the power to auction non-coal mines. 2. Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand do not have gold mines. 3. Rajasthan has iron ore mines. Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  1. A.1 and 2
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.1 and 3
  4. D.3 only

Correct answer

D. 3 only

Explanation

The correct answer is D, 3 only. Rajasthan does have iron ore deposits and mines, while the first two statements are false.

Under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, as amended in 2015, major minerals other than coal, such as iron ore, bauxite, limestone and gold, are granted by auction, and it is the State Governments that conduct these auctions and receive the revenue. Coal blocks are auctioned by the Centre. Rajasthan has iron ore at places such as Morija-Banol in Jaipur district and in Jhunjhunu and Udaipur. Gold is found in Jharkhand, for example at Parasi in the Ranchi area, and in Andhra Pradesh in the Ramagiri belt of Anantapur district.

A is wrong: both statements 1 and 2 are false.

B is wrong: statement 2 is false, as both states have gold mines.

C is wrong: statement 1 is false, as states do auction non-coal mines.

Exam tip: non-coal mineral auctions = State Governments (MMDR 2015); coal auctions = Centre.
