Consider the following countries : I. Bolivia II. Brazil III. Colombia IV. Ecuador V. Paraguay VI. Venezuela Andes mountains pass through how many of the above countries?

  1. A.Only two
  2. B.Only three
  3. C.Only four
  4. D.Only five

Correct answer

C. Only four

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Only four. Of the six countries listed, the Andes pass through Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, but not through Brazil or Paraguay.

The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world, running about 7,000 km along the western edge of South America. They cross seven countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. They are young fold mountains raised where the Nazca Plate sinks below the South American Plate, and Aconcagua in Argentina is their highest peak. In Venezuela the range ends in the Cordillera de Mérida, and Bolivia holds the high Altiplano with Lake Titicaca.

A and B are wrong: they undercount, since four of the listed countries lie on the Andes.

D is wrong: it would need Brazil or Paraguay to be Andean. Brazil lies east of the range, on the Brazilian Highlands and the Amazon basin, and landlocked Paraguay is lowland of the Gran Chaco and the Paraná basin.

Exam tip: Andes countries = V-C-E-P-B-C-A (Venezuela to Argentina); Brazil and Paraguay are not among them.
