Among the following cities, which one lies on a longitude closest to that of Delhi ?

  1. A.Bengaluru
  2. B.Hyderabad
  3. C.Nagpur
  4. D.Pune

Correct answer

A. Bengaluru

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Bengaluru. Delhi lies at about 77.2° East and Bengaluru at about 77.6° East, so the two are almost on the same meridian.

Longitude measures how far east or west a place is from the Prime Meridian at Greenwich. Although Bengaluru is about 1,700 km south of Delhi, the two cities differ by less than half a degree of longitude, which is why a north-south line from Delhi passes close to Bengaluru. The other cities lie farther from Delhi's meridian: Hyderabad is at about 78.5° E, Nagpur at about 79.1° E and Pune at about 73.9° E. India's Standard Meridian of 82.5° E, by contrast, passes near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.

B is wrong: Hyderabad is more than one degree east of Delhi.

C is wrong: Nagpur, near the centre of India, is nearly two degrees east of Delhi.

D is wrong: Pune is more than three degrees west of Delhi.

Exam tip: Delhi 77.2° E and Bengaluru 77.6° E share almost one meridian; "central" Nagpur is the trap.
