  1. A.Chlorofluorocarbons
  2. B.Hydrofluorocarbons
  3. C.Sulphur dioxide
  4. D.Methyl bromide
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Hydrofluorocarbons

Hydrofluorocarbons were adopted as substitutes for chlorofluorocarbons in refrigeration and air conditioning because they do not harm the ozone layer, but they turned out to be very powerful greenhouse gases, so the Kigali Amendment of 2016 brought them under the Montreal Protocol with a schedule for reducing their use.

Q5183.Environment & EcologyMedium

The term marble cancer refers to

  1. A.The corrosion of marble monuments by acidic pollutants
  2. B.A disease of quarry workers who cut marble
  3. C.The growth of algae on marble floors
  4. D.The cracking of marble by extremes of temperature
Show answer
Correct answer: A. The corrosion of marble monuments by acidic pollutants

Marble is calcium carbonate, and sulphur dioxide in polluted air, along with the sulphuric acid of acid rain, reacts with it to form calcium sulphate, so the stone loses its shine, turns yellow and becomes pitted and flaky.

Q5184.Environment & EcologyEasy

Acid rain is mainly caused by the atmospheric release of which gases?

  1. A.Carbon dioxide and methane
  2. B.Sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen
  3. C.Carbon monoxide and ozone
  4. D.Chlorofluorocarbons and halons
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen

These gases come from burning coal and oil in thermal power stations, smelters and vehicles, are oxidised in the atmosphere and dissolve in water droplets to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid, which come down as acid rain.

Q5185.Environment & EcologyEasy

The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, deals with which of the following?

  1. A.Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  2. B.Substances that deplete the ozone layer
  3. C.Transboundary movement of hazardous waste
  4. D.Conservation of wetlands
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Substances that deplete the ozone layer

The Montreal Protocol was adopted in 1987 under the Vienna Convention of 1985 and sets the timetable by which countries must stop producing and using chlorofluorocarbons, halons, carbon tetrachloride, methyl chloroform and methyl bromide.

Q5186.Environment & EcologyMedium

The thickness of the ozone column in the atmosphere is measured in which unit?

  1. A.Dobson unit
  2. B.Curie
  3. C.Decibel
  4. D.Angstrom
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Dobson unit

The Dobson unit, named after the scientist who built the instrument for measuring atmospheric ozone, expresses how thick the ozone column would be if all of it were brought down to the surface at standard temperature and pressure; a hundred Dobson units correspond to a layer one millimetre thick.

Q5187.Environment & EcologyEasy

The ozone layer that protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation lies in which layer of the atmosphere?

  1. A.Troposphere
  2. B.Stratosphere
  3. C.Mesosphere
  4. D.Thermosphere
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Stratosphere

About nine tenths of the atmosphere's ozone lies in the stratosphere, roughly fifteen to thirty five kilometres above the surface, where ultraviolet rays split oxygen molecules and the free atoms combine with other oxygen molecules to make ozone.

Q5188.Environment & EcologyAsked in: Uttar Pradesh · UPPSC General Studies 2020Hard

Which one of the following is NOT a greenhouse gas found naturally in the atmosphere?

  1. A.Nitrogen oxide
  2. B.Carbon dioxide
  3. C.Methane
  4. D.Ozone
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Nitrogen oxide

Nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide, together written as nitrogen oxides, are air pollutants that come mainly from combustion in vehicles and power stations; they help form smog and acid rain but are not counted among the greenhouse gases of the natural atmosphere.

Q5190.Environment & EcologyAsked in: RRB JE · 29 Aug 2019Medium

Which of the following statements about ozone is true?

  1. A.All of the options
  2. B.Ozone is highly reactive
  3. C.Ozone protects us from the harmful UV radiation of the sun
  4. D.Ozone is the major constituent of photochemical smog
Show answer
Correct answer: A. All of the options

Each of the other three statements is correct on its own, which is exactly why the combined option is the answer.

Q5191.General ScienceMedium

What is the shape of a methane molecule?

  1. A.Linear
  2. B.Trigonal planar
  3. C.Tetrahedral
  4. D.Pyramidal
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Tetrahedral

In methane the carbon atom is joined to four hydrogen atoms by four single bonds and has no lone pair, so the four bonding pairs push one another as far apart as possible and point to the corners of a regular tetrahedron, with bond angles of about 109.5 degrees.

Q5195.General ScienceEasy

A chemical bond formed by the complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another is called a:

  1. A.Covalent bond
  2. B.Ionic bond
  3. C.Coordinate bond
  4. D.Hydrogen bond
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ionic bond

In an ionic or electrovalent bond a metal atom loses one or more electrons to a non-metal atom; the metal becomes a positive ion and the non-metal a negative ion, and the electrostatic attraction between the two holds the compound together, as in sodium chloride and magnesium oxide.

Which of the following is used as a catalyst in the hydrogenation of vegetable oil?

  1. A.Pb
  2. B.Ni
  3. C.H2
  4. D.He
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Ni

Vegetable oils contain unsaturated fatty acids with carbon-carbon double bonds, and when hydrogen is passed through the oil at about 60 degrees Celsius in the presence of finely divided nickel, the double bonds add hydrogen and become saturated, turning the liquid oil into semi-solid vanaspati.

Which of the following is an amphoteric oxide?

  1. A.Aluminium oxide
  2. B.Iron (II) oxide
  3. C.Magnesium oxide
  4. D.Carbon dioxide
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Aluminium oxide

An amphoteric oxide reacts with both acids and bases to give a salt and water. Aluminium oxide dissolves in hydrochloric acid to give aluminium chloride and in sodium hydroxide to give sodium aluminate, so it behaves as a base in one case and as an acid in the other.

Ethylene, also called ethene, has the formula C2H4, and its two carbon atoms share two pairs of electrons, which is a carbon-carbon double bond made of one sigma and one pi bond; it is the simplest alkene.

Q5200.General ScienceAsked in: RRB ALP · 29 Aug 2018, Shift 2Medium

Which of the following is NOT a double displacement reaction?

  1. A.BaCl2 + H2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2HCl
  2. B.2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
  3. C.CuSO4 + H2S → CuS + H2SO4
  4. D.NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O

In a double displacement reaction two compounds exchange their ions, so both reactants must be compounds. Here hydrogen and oxygen are elements combining to form a single product, water, which makes it a combination reaction and also a combustion and redox reaction, but certainly not a double displacement.
