CDS GK Questions 2026

Static GK carries most of the 100 marks of the CDS General Knowledge paper. Of the 120 questions in the CDS (II) 2026 paper, about 20 were on Indian Polity, about 20 on the History of India, about 15 on Geography and the environment, about 10 on the Indian Economy and about 37 on Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which makes CDS the most science-heavy General Knowledge paper among the major recruitment exams. Polity questions test writs, the NHRC, electoral systems, disqualification of legislators, GST and delimitation. History runs from the Upanishads and the Shunga dynasty to Vijayanagara, temple architecture, the Sylhet referendum and the SNDP Yogam. Geography asks about the atmosphere, earthquakes and tsunamis, Ramsar sites, mangroves and World Heritage sites. Science stays at school level but expects reasoning: a lens problem, a magnetic field direction, molarity versus molality, what cooking soda is, how enzymes act. This page holds GK24's topic-wise GK notes for CDS, written as short facts and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Read a topic, then solve its previous-year questions and quiz on this site to check what stayed with you.

A sample of 'soft soap' contains

  1. A.Caesium
  2. B.Potassium
  3. C.Calcium
  4. D.Magnesium

Q3862.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2021, GATEasy

Which of the following sets of elements has the same valency?

  1. A.Na, Mg, Ca
  2. B.Na, Mg, Al
  3. C.Mg, Ca, K
  4. D.Mg, Ca, Ba
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Mg, Ca, Ba

Magnesium, calcium and barium are all alkaline earth metals of group 2, and each has a valency of 2. Elements in the same group of the periodic table have the same number of electrons in their outermost shell, and so the same valency.

Q3866.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2023, GATEasy

Eukaryotic cells are much more complex as compared to prokaryotes. Which one of the following structures is exclusively present in a eukaryotic cell ?

  1. A.Cell wall
  2. B.Plasma membrane
  3. C.Nucleic acid
  4. D.Mitochondria
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Mitochondria

Mitochondria are membrane-bound organelles, and only eukaryotic cells have membrane-bound organelles. Prokaryotes such as bacteria and cyanobacteria have no true nucleus and no membrane-bound organelles; their DNA lies in a region called the nucleoid, and they carry out respiration on their plasma membrane.

Q3869.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2026, GATMedium

A particle is moved from point X to point Y under a force field. The work done depends only on the initial and final speeds. Which one of the following is correct?

  1. A.The force is conservative.
  2. B.The net work equals the change in kinetic energy.
  3. C.The force is constant.
  4. D.The velocity must always increase.
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The net work equals the change in kinetic energy.

A work done that is fixed by the starting and ending speeds alone is exactly what the work-energy theorem states: W(net) = ½mv² − ½mu².

Q3870.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2017, GATMedium

Molecules of which of the following has cage like structure ?

1. Diamond

2. Graphite

3. Fullerenes

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

  1. A.1, 2 and 3
  2. B.2 and 3 only
  3. C.2 only
  4. D.3 only
Show answer
Correct answer: D. 3 only

Of the three forms of carbon, only fullerenes are made of closed, hollow, cage-like molecules. The best-known fullerene is buckminsterfullerene, C60, a hollow sphere of 60 carbon atoms arranged in 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons, shaped like a football.

Q3872.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2018, GATEasy

Which one of the following is the natural phenomenon based on which a simple periscope works?

  1. A.Reflection of light
  2. B.Refraction of light
  3. C.Dispersion of light
  4. D.Total internal reflection of light
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Reflection of light

A simple periscope has two plane mirrors, and light reaches the eye only by bouncing off them. In a simple periscope, two plane mirrors are fixed parallel to each other at the two bends of a long tube, each tilted at 45° to its length.

Q3873.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2018, GATMedium

Which one of the following is called 'syngas'?

  1. A.C(s) + H2O(g)
  2. B.CO(g) + H2O(g)
  3. C.CO(g) + H2(g)
  4. D.NO2(g) + H2(g)
Show answer
Correct answer: C. CO(g) + H2(g)

A mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is called synthesis gas, or syngas, because it is the starting material for making methanol and many other compounds.

Which one of the following is NOT a synthetic detergent ?

  1. A.CH3(CH2)10CH2OSO3⁻Na⁺
  2. B.[CH3(CH2)15–N⁺(CH3)3]Br⁻
  3. C.CH3(CH2)16COO⁻Na⁺
  4. D.CH3(CH2)16COO(CH2CH2O)nCH2CH2OH
Show answer
Correct answer: C. CH3(CH2)16COO⁻Na⁺

This is sodium stearate, the sodium salt of a long-chain fatty acid, which makes it a soap and not a synthetic detergent.

Q3875.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2019, GATEasy

Which one of the following statements about water is not true ?

  1. A.Hydrogen bonds are present in liquid water.
  2. B.Water has a high boiling point.
  3. C.Water has a high heat of fusion.
  4. D.Water is a non-polar molecule.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Water is a non-polar molecule.

This statement is false: water is a strongly polar molecule. In a water molecule the oxygen atom is much more electronegative than hydrogen, so it pulls the shared electrons towards itself and carries a partial negative charge, while the two hydrogens carry partial positive charges.

Q3876.Environment & EcologyAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2021, GATMedium

Which one of the following statements about biodiversity is not correct ?

  1. A.The term 'biodiversity' was coined by Walter G. Rosen in 1986.

  4. D.More than 100 hotspots of biodiversity are identified in the world.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. More than 100 hotspots of biodiversity are identified in the world.

This is the incorrect statement: the world has 36 recognised biodiversity hotspots, far fewer than 100. The hotspot idea came from the British ecologist Norman Myers, who in 1988 named ten tropical forest regions that were very rich in species and under heavy threat.

The mass number of argon is 40. Which one of the following statements is correct?

  1. A.The number of protons in argon is 22.
  2. B.The number of neutrons in argon is 18.
  3. C.The number of electrons in argon is 18.
  4. D.The sum of numbers of protons and electrons in argon is 40.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The number of electrons in argon is 18.

Argon has atomic number 18, and a neutral atom has as many electrons as protons, so it has 18 electrons.

Q3879.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2023, GATEasy

The two important features of sexual reproduction in higher organisms that create genetic diversity in offspring are

  1. A.Mitosis and fertilization
  2. B.Meiosis and fertilization
  3. C.Mitosis and binary fission
  4. D.Meiosis and conjugation
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Meiosis and fertilization

Meiosis makes gametes that differ from one another, and fertilization joins a gamete from each of two parents, so every offspring gets a new mix of genes.
