CDS GK Questions 2026

Static GK carries most of the 100 marks of the CDS General Knowledge paper. Of the 120 questions in the CDS (II) 2026 paper, about 20 were on Indian Polity, about 20 on the History of India, about 15 on Geography and the environment, about 10 on the Indian Economy and about 37 on Physics, Chemistry and Biology, which makes CDS the most science-heavy General Knowledge paper among the major recruitment exams. Polity questions test writs, the NHRC, electoral systems, disqualification of legislators, GST and delimitation. History runs from the Upanishads and the Shunga dynasty to Vijayanagara, temple architecture, the Sylhet referendum and the SNDP Yogam. Geography asks about the atmosphere, earthquakes and tsunamis, Ramsar sites, mangroves and World Heritage sites. Science stays at school level but expects reasoning: a lens problem, a magnetic field direction, molarity versus molality, what cooking soda is, how enzymes act. This page holds GK24's topic-wise GK notes for CDS, written as short facts and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Read a topic, then solve its previous-year questions and quiz on this site to check what stayed with you.

Which one of the following statements is not correct?

  1. A.Most carbon compounds are good conductors of electricity.
  2. B.Bonding in organic compounds is covalent.
  3. C.Graphite is used as a lubricant.
  4. D.Diamond is an allotrope of carbon.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Most carbon compounds are good conductors of electricity.

Most carbon compounds are poor conductors of electricity, because their atoms are joined by covalent bonds and they do not form ions or free electrons that could carry a current.

Q2391.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2024, GATMedium

Consider the two statements given below : Statement-1 : Infrared waves are also called heat waves. Statement-2 : Water molecules readily absorb infrared waves. Select the correct answer using the code given below:

  1. A.Both the statements are individually true and Statement-2 is the correct explanation of Statement-1.
  2. B.Both the statements are individually true, but Statement-2 is not the correct explanation of Statement-1.
  3. C.Statement-1 is true, but Statement-2 is false.
  4. D.Statement-2 is true, but Statement-1 is false.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Both the statements are individually true and Statement-2 is the correct explanation of Statement-1.

Both statements are true, and the second explains the first: infrared waves are called heat waves because water molecules, present in most materials, absorb them readily and heat up.

Q2392.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2024, GATEasy

Which one of the following statements best defines the concept of heat?

  1. A.The transformation of energy from one form to another
  2. B.The conversion of energy into mass and vice-versa due to temperature difference
  3. C.The transfer of energy due to temperature difference
  4. D.The change in volume of a substance with temperature
Show answer
Correct answer: C. The transfer of energy due to temperature difference

Heat is energy in transit: it flows from a hotter body to a colder one only because their temperatures differ, and stops when they reach the same temperature.

Q2394.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2018, GATMedium

Which one of the following is the number of water molecules that share with two formula unit CaSO₄ in plaster of Paris ?

  1. A.One
  2. B.Two
  3. C.Five
  4. D.Ten
Show answer
Correct answer: A. One

Plaster of Paris is calcium sulphate hemihydrate, CaSO₄·½H₂O, so one molecule of water is shared by two formula units of calcium sulphate, written (CaSO₄)₂·H₂O. It is made by heating gypsum, CaSO₄·2H₂O, to about 373 K (100 °C), when gypsum loses one and a half molecules of water per formula unit.

Q2395.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2018, GATMedium

Consider the following statements about visible light, UV light and X-rays: 1. The wavelength of visible light is more than that of X-rays. 2. The energy of X-ray photons is higher than that of UV light photons. 3. The energy of UV light photons is less than that of visible light photons. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. A.1, 2 and 3
  2. B.1 and 2 only
  3. C.2 and 3 only
  4. D.1 only
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 1 and 2 only

In the order visible light → ultraviolet → X-rays, the wavelength falls and the photon energy rises, so statements 1 and 2 are true and 3 is false.

Q2397.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-II 2019, GATEasy

Light rays move in straight lines. But through an optical fibre, they can move in any type of zigzag path because

  1. A.the holes through the fibre are extremely fine.
  2. B.light rays are absorbed at the entry end and relieved at the exit end of the fibre.
  3. C.scattering of light occurs inside the fibre.
  4. D.successive total internal reflections occur as a ray moves through the fibre.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. successive total internal reflections occur as a ray moves through the fibre.

Light inside an optical fibre strikes the wall at more than the critical angle, is totally reflected back inside, and repeats this again and again along the fibre.

Q2399.General ScienceAsked in: NDA · NDA-I 2022, GATEasy

Which one of the following statements about fertilizers is not correct?

  1. A.Urea is a phosphorus-containing fertilizer.

Which one of the following statements about X-rays is not true ?

  1. A.They have wavelengths of about 1 Å.
  2. B.These can be generated by bombarding a metal target by high energy electrons.
  3. C.Due to their wavelengths being shorter, these can be used for radar systems.
  4. D.These are also used for the treatment of certain forms of cancer.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Due to their wavelengths being shorter, these can be used for radar systems.

X-rays are not used in radar; radar works with microwaves, which have wavelengths of a few centimetres. X-rays lie between ultraviolet rays and gamma rays in the electromagnetic spectrum, with wavelengths from about 10 nm down to 0.01 nm, so about 1 Å (0.1 nm) is typical.
