Why in News

On 15 September 2026 Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel inaugurated the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 at Gandhinagar, the first edition hosted in South Asia.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav opened the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 at Gandhinagar on 15 September 2026. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel joined him. The forum runs from 15 to 18 September. Its theme is Circular Economy: Transition for People and Prosperity.

A first for the region

The Chief Minister called this the first hosting of the forum in South Asia. He said it reflects India's growing weight in global environmental leadership. He described Mission LiFE as a foundation for the global circular economy. He gave the example of offerings at the Somnath Temple, which are recycled into usable resources and support local livelihoods.

What the Union Minister said

Bhupender Yadav said the circular economy is not a new destination for India but a fresh way of seeing old wisdom. He summed up the ethos in three pairs: repair before replace, reuse before discard and recover before waste. He said the true measure of a circular economy is not how much waste is recycled but how little value is allowed to be wasted. He called circularity inherently collaborative, since knowledge, technology, finance and responsibility must travel across borders and sectors.

The numbers on waste

Item, as of August 2026Figure
Producers registered under EPR frameworksMore than 83,000
Recyclers registered4,802
Waste processed across regulated streamsNearly 482.24 lakh metric tonnes
Exhibitors at the forum135, national and international
ParticipantsOver 3600 from 62 countries

The international voices

The Ambassador of Finland, Mikko Kivikoski, said circularity has become part of his country's national policy. He noted Finland's aim of keeping resource consumption below the level of 2015 by the year 2035. He said more than 100 Finnish companies working in India use sustainable technologies. From the Netherlands, Marieke Spijkerboer said her country aims to become fully circular by 2050.

What else happened

Two publications were released at the inaugural session. They are 'Best Practices for Reuse of Treated Sewage' and a guide to India's circular economy and EPR initiatives. The forum is organised jointly by the Central Pollution Control Board, the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, the Union environment ministry, the Government of Gujarat and the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. The minister also recalled the Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Industry Coalition launched during India's G20 Presidency.

Practice Questions

Q1.Summits & ConferencesMedium

What is the theme of the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 held at Gandhinagar?

  1. A.Circular Economy: Transition for People and Prosperity
  2. B.Waste to Wealth for a Green Tomorrow
  3. C.One Earth, One Resource, One Future
  4. D.Sustainable Consumption and Responsible Production
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Circular Economy: Transition for People and Prosperity

Explanation

The correct answer is Circular Economy: Transition for People and Prosperity, the theme under which the forum is being organised at Gandhinagar. Option B echoes the idea of converting waste into wealth, which the Gujarat Chief Minister did speak about while describing Indian traditions, but it is not the theme of the forum. Option C is an invented slogan of the kind often used for environmental meetings and has no basis in the release. Option D borrows the language of sustainable development goals and is therefore plausible, but again it is not the theme announced here. An aspirant should store the theme along with the other identifying facts of this edition: the venue in Gujarat, the dates from fifteen to eighteen September, and the distinction of being the first hosting of the forum in South Asia.

Q2.Summits & ConferencesHard

Which of these is a co-organiser of the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 in India?

  1. A.United Nations Environment Programme
  2. B.The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra
  3. C.World Economic Forum
  4. D.International Energy Agency
Show answer

Correct answer: B. The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra

Explanation

The correct answer is the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra. The release lists the organisers as the Central Pollution Control Board, that Finnish fund, the Government of Finland, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Government of Gujarat and the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. Option A is wrong because the United Nations environment body is not named among the organisers, even though the subject falls within its field. Option C is wrong because the forum at Gandhinagar is distinct from the annual meeting of that body. Option D is wrong because the energy agency works on energy markets and security rather than circularity. Remember the Finnish connection through the other detail in the release as well: the Ambassador of Finland spoke of keeping resource consumption below the level of 2015 by the year 2035.

Q3.Summits & ConferencesHard

How many recyclers were registered under India's Extended Producer Responsibility frameworks as of August 2026?

  1. A.1,802 recyclers
  2. B.3,402 recyclers
  3. C.4,802 recyclers
  4. D.8,300 recyclers
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 4,802 recyclers

Explanation

The correct answer is 4,802 recyclers, the figure the Union Environment Minister gave while describing how regulatory reform and digital compliance systems have moved India towards a circular economy. The same sentence carries two companion numbers worth learning together: more than eighty three thousand producers registered under the various frameworks, and nearly four hundred and eighty two lakh metric tonnes of waste processed across regulated waste streams. Option A and option B are invented figures placed close to the right one, which is the usual way of testing whether a candidate has memorised the exact number. Option D is a distortion of the producers figure and is designed to catch anyone who has mixed up the two categories. Keep producers and recyclers separate in memory, since a question may ask for either.
