IAF SDI Signs MoA with IIT Madras for Secure Airborne Communication
The IAF's Software Development Institute signed an MoA with IIT Madras and IITM Pravartak to build an indigenous digital secure communication system for aircraft.

Why in News
On 6 November 2026 the Ministry of Defence announced that the IAF's Software Development Institute had signed an MoA with IIT Madras and IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation to develop an indigenous airborne digital secure communication system.
The Indian Air Force has turned to academia to build its own secure radio links for aircraft. A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) has been inked between the IAF's Software Development Institute (SDI) on one side and, on the other, IIT Madras together with the IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation. The Ministry of Defence announced the agreement on 6 November 2026.
What the agreement covers
The three partners will jointly design and develop an indigenous digital secure communication system for airborne applications, that is, for use on board aircraft. Under the collaboration the IAF plans to work with IIT Madras and the Pravartak foundation on advanced algorithms for communication systems and for networking.
Who signed
| Role | Name |
|---|---|
| Signatory for the IAF | Air Vice Marshal Sarabjit Singh, Commandant, SDI |
| Signatory for the foundation | Dr M J Shankar Raman, CEO, IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation |
| Present at signing | Prof V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras |
Why it matters
- Less dependence on imports: communication equipment for military aircraft has often been sourced from abroad; a home-grown system cuts that reliance.
- Operational efficiency: a system designed around the IAF's own needs is expected to make its operations more efficient.
- Atmanirbhar Bharat: the project is presented as a contribution to the national goal of self-reliance in defence technology.
The partners in brief
The SDI is the IAF's in-house institute for software work. IIT Madras, based in Chennai, is among the country's leading engineering institutes, and the IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation is linked to it and works on turning research into usable technology. Bringing a military user together with an academic institute and its technology foundation is a model the armed forces are using more often for indigenous development.
Exam angle
A question can ask which wing of the IAF signed the deal (the Software Development Institute), with which institute (IIT Madras along with IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation), for what purpose (an indigenous digital secure communication system for airborne use) and who signed it. Remember that Prof V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, was present but was not a signatory.
