TRAI Releases Mobile Network Drive Test Findings for Sonitpur
TRAI released findings of an independent drive test in Assam’s Sonitpur district, where Reliance Jio logged the best average download speed of 221.18 Mbps.

Why in News
On 30 September 2026 TRAI released the findings of its Independent Drive Test on mobile network quality in Sonitpur district of Assam, measuring coverage, call performance and data speeds of all telecom service providers.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has published the findings of an Independent Drive Test (IDT) carried out in Sonitpur district of Assam, under the Assam Licensed Service Area. The test was run in August 2026 to let ordinary subscribers see how voice and data services of the telecom service providers actually perform on the ground.
How the test was done
The drive test was conducted through an agency appointed by TRAI, under the supervision of its Regional Office at Kolkata, from 10 to 13 August 2026. It covered a city drive of 308.0 kilometres, ten hotspot locations and a walk test of 1.6 kilometres. Live voice and data sessions were set up on SIM cards of every operator across 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks, using several advanced test handsets, and the sessions were analysed in real time.
What was measured
The parameters covered coverage gap, Call Setup Success Rate, Drop Call Rate, call setup time, call silence rate, speech quality measured as MOS, and for data the download and upload throughput, latency, jitter and packet drop rate.
Speeds recorded
| Operator | Average download | Average upload |
| Reliance Jio | 221.18 Mbps | 15.98 Mbps |
| Airtel | 116.11 Mbps | 21.09 Mbps |
| Vodafone Idea | 20.04 Mbps | 6.69 Mbps |
| BSNL | 11.72 Mbps | 4.32 Mbps |
Voice and coverage
On the city drive route in auto-selection mode, poor signal strength was recorded in 1494 of 43999 samples for Reliance Jio, 1766 of 44378 for Airtel, 6682 of 44109 for Vodafone Idea and 18494 of 41037 for BSNL. On dropped calls, Airtel lost none of 311 established calls and Reliance Jio none of 316, Vodafone Idea lost 8 of 312, while BSNL dropped 301 of 476. Call silence instances lasting more than three seconds numbered 13 of 309 for Airtel, 7 of 253 for BSNL, 7 of 309 for Reliance Jio and 8 of 310 for Vodafone Idea. TRAI publishes such findings so that consumers are informed and operators are pushed to improve.

Exam Point of View
Note that TRAI is the telecom regulator that runs Independent Drive Tests, the district tested (Sonitpur, Assam), the supervising office (Regional Office Kolkata), the parameters (coverage gap, CSSR, drop call rate, MOS, throughput, latency, jitter) and the best download speed recorded, 221.18 Mbps by Reliance Jio.
Practice Questions
Which operator recorded the highest average download speed in TRAI’s Sonitpur drive test?
- A.Airtel
- B.BSNL
- C.Reliance Jio
- D.Vodafone Idea
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Reliance Jio
Explanation
The correct answer is Reliance Jio, whose average download speed on the tested routes was 221.18 Mbps, the highest of the four operators. Option A, Airtel, came second at 116.11 Mbps, roughly half of that figure, though Airtel did lead on uploads with 21.09 Mbps against Reliance Jio’s 15.98 Mbps. Option D, Vodafone Idea, averaged 20.04 Mbps on downloads and 6.69 Mbps on uploads. Option B, BSNL, was last at 11.72 Mbps for downloads and 4.32 Mbps for uploads, and it also showed the weakest voice performance, dropping 301 of 476 established calls. The lesson for the examination is to separate the download leader from the upload leader, because the drive test put two different operators at the top of those two columns.
Which body conducts the Independent Drive Test that assesses mobile network quality?
- A.Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
- B.Bureau of Indian Standards
- C.Department of Posts
- D.Centre for Development of Telematics
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
Explanation
The correct answer is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the sector regulator, which conducts Independent Drive Tests through an appointed agency and publishes the findings for the information of telecom consumers. The purpose is to verify in real time the quality of voice and data services supplied by the telecom service providers, and to push those providers to improve. Option B, the Bureau of Indian Standards, is the national standards body and does not test mobile networks. Option C, the Department of Posts, runs postal services. Option D, the Centre for Development of Telematics, is a telecom research and development organisation that designs technology rather than auditing operators. Under TRAI the tests cover coverage, call setup success, dropped calls, call silence, speech quality and data throughput on live networks.
Sonitpur district, where the drive test was conducted, lies in which state?
- A.Meghalaya
- B.Assam
- C.Tripura
- D.Manipur
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Assam
Explanation
The correct answer is Assam. The drive test was carried out across parts of Sonitpur district, which falls in the Assam Licensed Service Area, and it was supervised by the TRAI Regional Office at Kolkata. Licensed Service Areas are the units into which telecom licensing is organised in India, and they usually follow state boundaries, which is why the report refers to the Assam LSA throughout. Options A, C and D name Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur, which are other north-eastern states with their own service areas and were not part of this exercise. Remember the pairing of the district with its state and with the supervising regional office, since drive test questions are usually set on the place, the period and the operator that came out on top.
