Why in News
On 22 October 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the NDTV World Summit 2026 in New Delhi, calling for stronger global institutions, a greater voice for the Global South and cooperation that holds firm during a crisis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the NDTV World Summit 2026 in New Delhi on 22 October 2026. Speaking at a gathering framed around the idea of a world between orders, he argued that the older global arrangement can no longer settle present-day crises, and that the hunt for a new one now reaches into the daily life of ordinary citizens.
Case for reformed global institutions
The Prime Minister recalled that the United Nations grew out of a belief that talking must count for more than brute strength, yet global bodies did not remake themselves as fresh economies, technologies and nations rose. Trade, technology and sea lanes, once the threads that tied countries together, are now being turned into instruments of pressure, he said. He repeated the appeal he had made from the G20 platform in 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, for an order built around humanity, and insisted that the Global South be given a real say.
Quoting Chanakya and his Arthashastra on Matsya Nyaya, where the bigger fish devours the smaller one, he said the country wants a system in which the strong cannot feed on the weak. He cited the supply of vaccines and medicines to more than 100 nations while richer countries turned inward, and the unanimous Delhi Declarations produced when India chaired the G20 and the BRICS summits.
Figures placed before the summit
- India has crossed 300 gigawatts of non-fossil electricity capacity for the first time.
- Penicillin G is again being made at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, revived under the Production Linked Incentive scheme.
- More than Rs 5,000 crore has flowed into Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient projects, with nearly forty of them running.
- One fifth of the global chip-design workforce sits in India, and students here have drawn up more than 325 chip designs.
- Close to 1.5 lakh patent applications were filed in 2025, and the country stands third in the world in research publications.
From back office to brain office
India hosts over half of the world's Global Capability Centres, the Prime Minister said, and has travelled from talent at scale to thinking at scale, working with other countries as a brain office rather than a back office. He counted a hydrogen train run, a digitally conducted Census and the Fast Breeder Reactor reaching criticality among the year's firsts, praised the Asian Games contingent for its haul of 85 medals including a maiden Sepak Takraw medal in the men's quadrant, and closed on the ambitions of 140 crore citizens.
