How it began and who took part

The campaign opened at the Ministry with the Swachhata pledge, administered under the aegis of Secretary Shri Keshav Chandra. The Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, joined a cleanliness drive at Yashwant Palace Market in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, along with the Secretary and senior officials, making the point that clean and hygienic markets depend on collective responsibility.

The Ministry also held a health camp for Safai Mitras and its own employees at Khanij Kaksh, GPOA-3, Netaji Nagar, New Delhi, in recognition of what sanitation workers contribute to keeping workplaces clean, and as a statement on their health, well-being and dignity.

What the field offices did

  • Cleaning of lakes and other water bodies.
  • Shramdaan, or voluntary labour, by staff.
  • Cleanliness drives around public places, including temples and bazaars.
  • Essay-writing contests in schools to spread environmental awareness.
  • Waste-to-art competitions to show how discarded material can be reused.

The Ministry closed by restating its commitment to the Swachh Bharat goal, holding that sustained collective action, responsibility towards the environment and the participation of the public are what build a cleaner and healthier country.
