GRSE Delivers 'Amini' ASW Shallow Water Craft to Indian Navy

Why in News

On 5 November 2026 Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata, delivered 'Amini', an indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, to the Indian Navy.

The Indian Navy has received another home-built anti-submarine vessel. 'Amini', one of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC), was handed over to the Navy on 5 November 2026. The ship was designed and constructed in India by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, and the Ministry of Defence announced the delivery on 6 November 2026.

Design and build

GRSE built the ASW SWCs of its line to the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). These craft rank among the largest warships of the Indian Navy that are driven by waterjets rather than conventional propellers, a design suited to operating in shallow coastal waters.

Weapons and sensors

  • Modern lightweight torpedoes
  • Indigenous rocket launchers
  • Sonars to find threats beneath the surface

Together these let the ship locate and engage underwater threats. Amini will add to the Navy's strength in three roles: anti-submarine warfare, coastal surveillance and mine laying.

The story behind the name

The ship takes its name from Amini Island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. It also revives the name of the earlier INS Amini, a Petya III class anti-submarine warfare corvette that was decommissioned in 2002. Passing distinguished names on to new ships is a long-standing naval tradition.

Self-reliance

Indigenous content in the ship is above 80 per cent. The ministry presents the delivery as another milestone in the Navy's drive for home-grown shipbuilding under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, and as evidence that the domestic defence manufacturing base is growing and leaning less on imports.
