Why in News

On 27 October 2026 the Ministry of Tribal Affairs announced that Janjatiya Gaurav Pakhwada will be observed from 1 to 15 November 2026, ending on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, with over 300 projects and two national digital launches.

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs will observe Janjatiya Gaurav Pakhwada across the country from 1 to 15 November 2026. The fortnight ends on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on 15 November, the birth anniversary of Dharti Aaba Bhagwan Birsa Munda. It is meant to be more than a commemoration: a time-bound drive to push the Ministry’s flagship programmes to the last mile and to spread awareness of schemes and entitlements among tribal families, students and citizens.

Background of the day

The day was designated on 15 November in 2021, honouring the part tribal heroes played in the freedom struggle and the place of tribal communities in the country’s cultural, spiritual and social life. It has since driven programmes such as PM-JANMAN and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan. Past celebrations were held at Ranchi in 2021, Khunti in 2022 and 2023, Jamui in 2024 and Dediapada in 2025. The 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda was marked as Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh in 2024-25, with over 28 national events and more than 2 lakh activities drawing above 3.8 crore participants.

National events through the fortnight

  • About 200 students of Eklavya Model Residential Schools will meet the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 12 November.

They include a new Tribal Research Institute building at Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and the Ropuiliani Tribal Freedom Fighter Museum at Kelsih in Mizoram.

Two national digital initiatives will be launched. The Jan-HIT Portal, short for Janjatiya Health Intelligence and Technology and built with ICMR, is described as the country’s first platform for tribe-disaggregated health data and covers 20 States. The National FRA Digital Platform will carry the whole forest rights claim process under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, from submission at the Gram Sabha to digitally signed titles, on one system.
