HAL Delivers Tejas Trainers and Dhruv NG Helicopters

What changed hands

A delivery ceremony at Bengaluru on 18 September 2026 saw Hindustan Aeronautics Limited part with nine aircraft in one go, split between two very different customers.

The Indian Air Force received five. Two of them are Tejas twin-seat trainers of the Light Combat Aircraft family, cleared to Final Operational Clearance standard. The other three are HTT 40 basic trainers, the aircraft on which a cadet first learns to fly.

Pawan Hans Limited, which flies civil helicopter services, took delivery of four Dhruv helicopters of the Next Generation variant.

Who attended

Two ministers were present, which is unusual for a handover and tells you how the government reads the moment. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh attended alongside Shri K Rammohan Naidu, who holds the Civil Aviation portfolio. The pairing reflects the split in the delivery itself, military aircraft on one side and a civil operator on the other.

What the Defence Minister said

Shri Rajnath Singh treated the occasion as a marker rather than a transaction, calling it a milestone on the road to building aerospace capability at home, and to the technological self-confidence that goes with it. The stated aim, in his words, is an India that is capable, self-reliant and able to compete globally in meeting its own aerospace needs.

He argued that the shift towards Aatmanirbharta in defence has been a systematic one rather than a sudden turn, with advanced equipment now being built within the country. On industry, his point was about balance: public sector undertakings have been given room to grow, but private firms have been encouraged too, and both are meant to compete on level terms.

The ask to industry and to engineers

Looking ahead, the Minister pressed for closer work between public and private players to build the next generation of indigenous aerospace capability. He also addressed himself to young scientists and engineers, telling them that transformative technologies are what will secure India a leading position in global aerospace.
