Why in News

On 22 October 2026 Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh inaugurated GYANDEEP, a Hindi library at Sena Bhawan in New Delhi, under the Ministry of Defence's Special Campaign 6, and the ministry reported the campaign's results so far.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh opened a new Hindi library named GYANDEEP at Sena Bhawan in New Delhi on 22 October 2026. The library is part of Special Campaign 6, which the Ministry of Defence is running from 2 to 31 October 2026. Its purpose is to put Hindi books and literature within reach of officials, to encourage the use of Hindi in official work and to strengthen the habit of working in Hindi, in keeping with the implementation of Rajbhasha, the official language policy.

What the campaign has cleared

Special Campaign 6 is a drive on cleanliness, record management and the disposal of obsolete material in government offices. The ministry has reported the following results so far:

Space freed in South BlockAbout 35,000 square feet
Handed over toProject Yuga Yugeen Bharat Museum
Electronic files closed1,361
Physical files weeded out1,746
Revenue from disposalRs 4.22 lakh

The space in South Block was freed by cleaning up and disposing of old records, and it has been surrendered to the Yuga Yugeen Bharat Museum project, the national museum being developed in the capital. The money came from selling electronic waste and other items that had gone out of use.

Recognition for the workers

At the same event the Defence Secretary felicitated eight Swachhta Veers, that is cleanliness champions, for their particular contribution during the campaign. The term is used in these campaigns for staff whose work on cleanliness and record disposal stands out.

Where the work is going on

Cleaning and upkeep of offices, segregation and disposal of electronic waste and related activities are being carried out regularly across the buildings of the Ministry of Defence. Besides Sena Bhawan, the work covers Kartavya Bhawan-II, Vayu Bhawan and the offices on KG Marg in New Delhi.

Why a Hindi library

Rajbhasha work in central ministries aims at increasing the use of Hindi in files, notes and correspondence, and a library of Hindi books inside an office building is a practical step in that direction, giving staff reading material in the language they are being asked to work in. For the Ministry of Defence, which runs a large network of offices in New Delhi, the library sits alongside the campaign's other aims of a tidier, better organised workplace with fewer dead records on the shelves. Special Campaign 6 ends on 31 October 2026, and the ministry is continuing the disposal and cleanliness work in its buildings until then.
