Why in News

On 8 October 2026 the Indian Coast Guard conducted SAREX-2026, the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise, off the Paradip coast in Odisha, with 32 observers from 30 countries present.

The Indian Coast Guard carried out the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise, known as SAREX-2026, in the waters off Paradip in Odisha on 8 October 2026. The drill was held under the umbrella of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSARB) and carried the theme Leveraging Technology to Strengthen SAR Preparedness and Maritime Safety. Agencies that work at sea and in the air were brought on to one platform to test how quickly they can act together when a large number of lives have to be saved in one go.

Who took part

Director General Paramesh Sivamani, the chief of the Indian Coast Guard, reviewed the exercise. Alongside the Coast Guard came the Navy, the Air Force, the Shipping Corporation of India, the Directorate General of Shipping, the fisheries and customs wings, the marine police, the Paradip Port Authority and the Odisha state administration. 32 observers drawn from 30 countries watched the drill, and the Coast Guard called their presence a step forward for cooperation across borders in rescue work at sea as well as a sign of India being counted on as a dependable partner in the region.

Ships and aircraft deployed

Fifteen Coast Guard ships went out, backed by three Dornier aircraft, three Advanced Light Helicopters and one Chetak helicopter. The Air Force added a C-130J transport aircraft and a Mi-17, the Navy sent two ships, and civil bodies, state agencies and shore-based support units completed the line-up.

The emergency that was rehearsed

The sea drill was built around a mass rescue operation set off by two emergencies at the same moment, one aeronautical and one maritime. A passenger aircraft carrying 228 persons was taken to have come down in the sea near Paradip Port, with its fuselage striking the container vessel MV Zumba and leaving the ship damaged and on fire. Crews opened an Incident Command Post and worked through firefighting, evacuation by helicopter, life rafts and air-droppable life rafts, Jason Cradle and Gemini recovery, rescue baskets and scramble net drills. A Remotely Operated Vehicle was put through its paces as well. The Coast Guard placed the whole exercise within the vision of SAGAR and the spirit of MAHASAGAR, repeating that no distress call at sea may go without a coordinated answer.

Practice Questions

Q1.DefenceEasy

Off which coast was the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise, SAREX-2026, conducted?

  1. A.Kochi, Kerala
  2. B.Paradip, Odisha
  3. C.Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh
  4. D.Mormugao, Goa
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Paradip, Odisha

Explanation

The correct answer is Paradip, Odisha. The Indian Coast Guard conducted the 12th edition of the National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise in the sea off Paradip on 8 October 2026, and the Paradip Port Authority along with the Odisha state administration took part in it. Option A, Kochi, is wrong: Kerala was not the setting for this edition, even though the Coast Guard keeps assets on the western seaboard. Option C, Visakhapatnam, is wrong: although it is a major port on the eastern coast, the drill named here was held off the Odisha coast and not off Andhra Pradesh. Option D, Mormugao in Goa, is wrong for the same reason, since the exercise was an eastern seaboard event. The rescue scenario itself placed the imagined aircraft crash close to Paradip Port, which fixes the location firmly.

Q2.DefenceMedium

What was the theme of SAREX-2026, the national maritime search and rescue exercise held in October 2026?

  1. A.Safe Seas, Safe Shores
  2. B.Leveraging Technology to Strengthen SAR Preparedness and Maritime Safety
  3. C.Blue Economy for a Resilient Coastline
  4. D.One Ocean, One Response
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Leveraging Technology to Strengthen SAR Preparedness and Maritime Safety

Explanation

The correct answer is Leveraging Technology to Strengthen SAR Preparedness and Maritime Safety. That was the theme chosen for the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise off Paradip, and it was borne out on the day by the demonstration of a Remotely Operated Vehicle and by the stress placed on a faster, technology-enabled and seamlessly coordinated rescue framework. Options A, C and D are plausible-sounding maritime slogans but none of them was the theme of this exercise. The exercise was held under the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board, was reviewed by Coast Guard Director General Paramesh Sivamani, and brought together maritime and aeronautical agencies to show operational readiness, interoperability and a coordinated answer to mass rescue operations at sea. Aspirants should link the edition, the theme and the venue together, since examiners usually test the three as a set.

Q3.DefenceMedium

How many foreign observers, and from how many countries, took part in SAREX-2026?

  1. A.22 observers from 18 countries
  2. B.32 observers from 30 countries
  3. C.45 observers from 25 countries
  4. D.52 observers from 40 countries
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 32 observers from 30 countries

Explanation

The correct answer is 32 observers from 30 countries. Their presence at the exercise off Paradip was treated as a notable step towards stronger cooperation between nations on rescue at sea, because it allowed an exchange of working practices, improved the ability of different forces to operate together, and underlined that India is relied upon as a search and rescue partner in its region. Options A, C and D give figures that were not reported for this edition. Candidates should also remember what was deployed alongside the observers: fifteen Coast Guard ships, three Dornier aircraft, three Advanced Light Helicopters, one Chetak helicopter, an Air Force C-130J and a Mi-17, two Navy ships, and a range of civil, state and shore-based units. The drill rehearsed a mass rescue after a passenger aircraft carrying 228 persons was taken to have ditched at sea.
