Why in News
On 22 October 2026 Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated 10 projects and laid the foundation stones of 33 more, together worth Rs 8,941 crore, for the rejuvenation of the Yamuna in Delhi, and said the river would be made clean by 2029.
Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah attended the inauguration and foundation-stone laying ceremony for projects worth Rs 8,941 crore connected with the rejuvenation of the Yamuna in Delhi on 22 October 2026. Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta were present.
What was launched
10 projects were inaugurated at the ceremony and 33 projects were initiated with foundation stones. The works include the upgradation of existing sewage treatment plants, the installation of new ones, a decentralised STP pumping station, and the connection of sewer lines to households. Sewer rehabilitation, tapping and drainage work is being carried forward alongside. The Home Minister said several lakh litres of water would be purified before flowing into the river, and that more than 40 per cent of the plan placed before the Delhi government had already been achieved.
The deadline and the four governments
The Home Minister said the Yamuna would be made clean by 2029, and expressed confidence that the river would be purified before May 2029. Time-bound roadmaps have been drawn up jointly for Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi, with the Centre and these three state governments working together. He recalled that for the past 30 years sewage from Delhi had been discharged into the river and about 2,000 tonnes of cow dung from dairies dumped into it every day, while industrial waste water from Haryana and dirty water from Uttar Pradesh also flowed in.
Garbage mountains and the land freed
On solid waste, the Home Minister said the Delhi government, with the Centre's help, had cleared 2.17 crore metric tonnes of garbage and freed 100 acres of land. The garbage mountains at Okhla and Bhalswa have come down by 30 to 40 metres and the one at Ghazipur by 10 to 15 metres. Gardens are expected to come up in their place in two years.
Riverfront works and the road ahead
He listed Asita East, Bansera and Vasudev Ghat at Sarai Kale Khan and ITO among the riverfront works already carried out. A three-year action plan has been prepared to give every household in Delhi a sewerage connection so that waste water is drained out, along with the supply of clean drinking water to every home. For an aspirant the numbers to carry away are the outlay, the count of projects inaugurated and begun, the deadline year and the quantity of garbage cleared.
