Why in News

On 27 October 2026 the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Yard 1283, named Srishti, was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa, marking another step in the Indian Navy's indigenous shipbuilding programme.

A new warship for the Indian Navy took to the water on 27 October 2026. Yard 1283, named Srishti, is a Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) and was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa. The launch ceremony was performed by Smt Sandeepa Sahay in the presence of Shri Vishvajit Sahay, Secretary (Defence Finance), and was attended by senior officials of the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Defence and the shipyard. The Ministry of Defence said the event followed the traditions and ethos long associated with the Indian Navy.

What the ship will do

An offshore patrol vessel is a mid-sized warship meant for long patrols in India's waters rather than for front-line fleet battles. The new class has been designed and built within the country, and the ships will add to the strength of the offshore patrol vessels already in service so that the Navy can handle several kinds of tasks at once. The duties listed for them are:

  • Maritime surveillance of India's sea areas
  • Search and rescue of vessels and crews in distress
  • Protection of offshore assets such as oil and gas installations at sea
  • Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, known by the short form HADR
  • Anti-piracy missions

Built at two yards

The NGOPVs are being constructed at the same time at two public sector shipyards, Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata. Building a class in parallel at two yards lets the Navy receive the ships sooner than a single yard could manage.

The name

Ships of this class draw their names from India's heritage. Srishti is a Sanskrit word that means creation, or the act of creating. The Ministry of Defence called the launch another milestone in the Navy's push for indigenous shipbuilding and placed it within the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India policies, under which warships for the Indian fleet are increasingly designed and welded together in Indian yards.
