Retail Inflation at 4.82 Percent in August 2026: CPI Data
Retail inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index on the base year 2024 equals 100 stood at 4.82 percent in August 2026, while food inflation reached 5.95 percent.

Why in News
On 14 September 2026 the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the Consumer Price Index for August 2026, which put retail inflation at 4.82 per cent and food inflation at 5.95 per cent.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the Consumer Price Index for August 2026. Retail inflation for the month was 4.82 per cent. The figure is a provisional estimate. It is measured year on year, that is August 2026 against August 2025. The index rests on the new base year, in which 2024 equals 100. This is the headline number that the Reserve Bank watches when it sets policy, so the monthly release is followed closely.
Villages saw prices rise faster than cities
The rural inflation rate was 5.23 per cent. The urban rate was lower, at 4.31 per cent. Rural India therefore faced the sharper price rise during the month. The same pattern showed up in the food series as well, so the rural figure is the larger one in both measures this month.
Food inflation at 5.95 per cent
Food prices are tracked separately by the Consumer Food Price Index. Its year on year rate for August 2026 was 5.95 per cent. Rural food inflation stood at 6.13 per cent. Urban food inflation stood at 5.64 per cent. Food inflation was thus higher than the general rate of price rise for the month.
Which items rose and which fell
The release also names the items at each end of the range. Silver jewellery topped the list of key items with high inflation. Ginger came next, followed by onion, then garlic, and then jewellery of gold, diamond and platinum. At the other end, tomato recorded the steepest fall in price among key items. Potato came next, followed by motor car and jeep, then lady's finger, and then parwal and kundru. Two of the five fastest rising items were forms of jewellery.
How the data is gathered
Field staff of the Field Operations Division of the National Statistical Office collect prices every week on a roster. They cover 1407 urban markets, online markets included, and 1465 villages, spread across all States and Union Territories. During August 2026 the response rate was 100 per cent in both rural and urban markets. State level figures are given for States with a population above 50 lakh as counted in the Census of 2011. The index for September 2026 will be released on 12 October 2026.

Practice Questions
What was India's retail inflation rate based on the Consumer Price Index in August 2026?
- A.3.96 per cent
- B.4.45 per cent
- C.4.82 per cent
- D.5.95 per cent
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 4.82 per cent
Explanation
The correct answer is 4.82 per cent. This is the provisional year on year rate for August 2026 compared with August 2025, worked out on the Consumer Price Index whose base year is 2024 equals 100. Options A and B are wrong because neither figure is the headline combined rate announced for August; candidates who half remember an earlier month or a sector rate tend to fall for them. Option D is wrong because 5.95 per cent is food inflation for August 2026, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index, which is a different series from the general index. The two numbers are put out on the same day and are very easy to mix up, so link the general rate of 4.82 per cent with all items taken together and the higher rate of 5.95 per cent with food alone. Also note that the rural rate of 5.23 per cent and the urban rate of 4.31 per cent sit on either side of the combined headline figure.
Which of the following correctly gives the rural and urban retail inflation rates for August 2026?
- A.Rural 4.31 per cent, urban 5.23 per cent
- B.Rural 5.23 per cent, urban 4.31 per cent
- C.Rural 6.13 per cent, urban 5.64 per cent
- D.Rural 3.96 per cent, urban 4.84 per cent
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Rural 5.23 per cent, urban 4.31 per cent
Explanation
The correct answer is rural 5.23 per cent and urban 4.31 per cent. In August 2026 villages saw prices rise faster than cities, and the release gives these two figures against a combined headline rate of 4.82 per cent. Option A simply reverses the two rates, and reversing rural and urban numbers is the commonest trap set in this kind of question, so the order must be read carefully. Option C is wrong because those are the rural and urban rates of food inflation for the same month, taken from the Consumer Food Price Index rather than from the general index; they are genuine figures but they answer a different question. Option D is wrong because those numbers do not belong to August at all. A useful way to hold all of this together is to note that in this release the rural number is larger than the urban number in both the general series and the food series.
Which item topped the list of key items with high inflation at the all India combined level in August 2026?
- A.Onion
- B.Ginger
- C.Silver jewellery
- D.Garlic
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Silver jewellery
Explanation
The correct answer is silver jewellery, which stood first among the key items with high inflation in August 2026. Option B is wrong because ginger came second on that list, below silver jewellery. Option A is wrong because onion was placed third. Option D is wrong because garlic was fourth, and jewellery of gold, diamond and platinum was fifth, which means that two of the five fastest rising items were forms of jewellery. Candidates should also remember the other end of the table, since paper setters often ask about the items that grew cheaper instead: tomato recorded the steepest fall, followed by potato, then motor car and jeep, then lady's finger, and finally parwal and kundru. Learning the order in both tables is worth the effort, because questions are set either on the item that rose most or on the item that fell most, and the two lists are published together every month.
